It seemed as if spring were here. Kichard Petty won his 7th Daytona 500 Sunday, Bobby Allison was second. Cherokee high school won the Western Sectional Wrestling Tournament held last weekend at Asheville High. Cherokee's 149.5 total edges host Asheville 139.5) and defending champion Enka (124). The 1-A school placed 8 wrestlers for the regional tournament in Hickory next week. Lots of us knock the education our children are getting in public schools, but last Thursday at the Tryon PTA meeting we heard students tell about the things they are learning from a computer and then watched them demonstrate. They spoke with such enthusiasm that it made us think of how we used to look forward to recess. The students are learning much more than most of us realize. If you don't believe it, look at some of their text books. The Polk County Commissioners will hold a special meeting Wednesday at 12 Continued On Back Page Service Station Burned Sunday The Pea Ridge Service Station operated by Jerry Metcalf was burned Sunday. The Mill Spring and Columbus Fire Departments received the call about 6:30 p.m. The fire had made too much headway to save the building Cause of the fire is not known Community Watch In Green Creek Residents of the Green Creek area Community Watch are encouraged to attend a meeting at the community building at Green Creek Elementary school, Thursday, Feb. 19th at 7:30 p m C. J. Conner, Crime Prevention Officer with the Rutherford County Sheriff's Dept., will show a 20 min film pertaining to Crime Walch. Willyene Shields, area chairman, is urging all block captains to attend and to contact residents in their assigned blocks to remind them of the meeting. A New Arrival Mr and Mrs. Ricky Bolt of Rt 1, Landrum are parents of a daughter, Shelly Marie, born Feb. 10th at St Luke's Hospital Maternal grandparents are Mr and Mrs Dana Nelon of Lake Lure. The paternal grandfather is Bill Bolt of Landrum and the paternal grandmother is Mrs Beulah Bolt of Ellenburg, N. C. Chimney Fire The Columbus Fire Department was called to the home of Dr. and Mrs Fred Wier on Denton Street, Friday about 5 p m. The chimney caught fire, but no damage was done to the house. Stove Overheated The Tryon Volunteer Fire Department was called out Sunday night to Mrs. Floyd Phillips' house on Screven Road where a stove had overheated. There was no fire damage. Heart In Saluda Tom E. Capell, a Florida native, educated at Mars Hill College, Mars Hill, North Carolina, pastor of the First Baptist Church, Saluda, for the past three years, is Saluda chairman for the Polk County Heart Association. Mr. Capell is president of the Community Club of Saluda Members of this club will serve as volunteers canvassing the community on Heart Sunday, February 22 In addition the churches of Saluda will give their Congregations an opportunity to contribute to the Heart Fund on Heart Sunday. Visiting Mrs. Karl 0 Nesslinger of Tryon during the weekend were Mr. and Mrs Roland Nesslinger and Miss Diana of Columbus, Ohio, Ralph Neslinger of Charlotte and Miss 1- rederica Georgia of Atlanta Landrum 2nd Grader Third In County; Fastest In State About 85 finalists from schools in Spartanburg County, participated in a geographical puzzle contest Saturday at Chapman Elementary School. Bob Walker, president of the 0. P. Earle Elementary School PTA officiated. The contest was sponsored by the South Carolina Congress of Parents and Teachers. Elizabeth Balaram of Woodland Heights Elementary School won the Spartanburg County Title with a time of 1 minute, 26 seconds, followed closely by Adrean Harrison, a fifth grader at Pacolet Elementary School. Leslie Lewellyn, a second grader at 0. P Earle Elementary School who replaced all 46 S C. counties in their proper places in the inlaid puzzle in one minute, 30 seconds, was third She also recorded the fastest time of any second grader in the state Leslie is the daughter of Mr and Mrs. Mike Lewellyn.
